Getting found inside Google's AI-powered search results.
Getting surfaced in Google's AI Overviews and Gemini-powered results still starts with solid SEO fundamentals — but it also rewards content that directly and concisely answers a specific question, since that's the format Gemini pulls from most easily.
SEO and GEO now overlap
Google's AI-generated summaries sit directly above traditional search results, drawing from the same indexed web — but they favor pages that answer a question cleanly in the first few sentences, rather than pages that make a reader scroll to find the point. This means classic SEO practices like fast pages, clear headings and quality backlinks still matter, but so does writing your key answer up front.
What tends to get surfaced
- Direct-answer openings. Lead each page or section with the answer, then explain the reasoning afterward.
- Well-organized structure. Numbered steps, bullet lists and clear headings are easy for Gemini to lift and summarize.
- Established authority. Existing SEO signals — backlinks, site age, technical health — still carry weight in what gets surfaced.
Don't treat this as a separate channel
The most efficient approach is to treat AI-powered search as an extension of good SEO and content practice, not a wholly separate discipline. The same page that ranks well organically, if restructured with clear, direct answers, becomes far more likely to be pulled into an AI Overview. This is a core part of the work inside our AI Visibility framework.
